Ministry of Social Development, Chile has recently published the National Socioeconomic Characterization Survey.

It brings expected figures but not good news. The income poverty rate did increase to 10.8% in 2020 compared with 8.6% in 2017, in other words, monetary poverty in 2020 was over 2.1 million people or almost 584 thousand more than in 2017. Regarding people living in extreme poverty almost doubled figures in the same period, jumping from 2.3% to 4.3%, adding over 413 thousand people living extreme deprivations.

All the above figures are based on the Income Poverty or basic needs met, but a Multidimensional measure of poverty that provides a more accurate reality, including deprivations of daily lives and basic capabilities approach or non-monetary aspects, was not possible to carry out exhaustively this time. There were obvious restrictions or lockdowns related to COVID-19 plus social and economic crises. So the actual impact is much devastating and according to specialists probably it will trigger setbacks at least a decade the gains pre-pandemic in the war on poverty in Chile.
