October 19, 2023 – 79th Anniversary!

This date will mark a new milestone for Chile’s Hogar de Cristo Foundation. It is the 79th anniversary of a permanent full-time mission of transforming lives and building trajectories of inclusion throughout Chile. In 2022, Hogar de Cristo, a laic organization, impacted almost 44,000 people through 258 programs.

And so, this incredible journey began on a rainy night in Santiago in October 1944. It all started with a particular encounter that changed everything! Fr. Alberto Hurtado was walking back home when an unexpected encounter with a very sick homeless moved him to tears because there was no shelter to help that person.

Later, on October 16, speaking at a women’s retreat, he spontaneously brought this incident to the ladies. The force of his inspirational speech so strongly impacted women that they immediately started donating to organize it. This singular act soon gave form to what would become one of his most significant and best-known apostolic works, the Hogar de Cristo. On October 19, 1944, Alberto Hurtado launched the idea to create a Hogar de Cristo.

The social strategy of Hogar de Cristo 2023 doesn’t believe in providing just palliative solutions to relieve immediate adversities but in looking for innovation, joining efforts with others, and getting creative solutions based on the evidence to transform structures that perpetuate fragility, limiting the people’s freedom.
