Over 2,600 Elderly assisted in our In-Home Care Programs throughout Chile (PADAM).

SUMMARY.

The elderly we serve that exceeds 2,600 per day are facing not just isolation and effects of loneliness, but many times abandonment, exacerbated by preexisting inequalities and long stories of deprivations, health problems, poverty, and social exclusion. In addition, the long and required coronavirus restrictions have aggravated all the above factors, even increasing the risks of suicide for many of this population.

The permanent goal of In-Home Care programs from Hogar de Cristo (PADAM) is to provide the best quality of life and preserve personal independence and dignified end-of-life care for each elderly, building an environment of support can trust and allow us to help in the caregiving role.

We need your valuable help to continue assisting on this life-saving cause. DONATE TO THIS CAUSE THROUGH GLOBALGIVING

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

There are more than 470,000 people over 80 years old in Chile. Nearly 16 percent live by themselves, without care from their offspring or networks.

Since the first quarter of 2020, the Chilean Health Authority has urged older adults because of their high risk of staying home with few visitors. Certainly, these restrictions have helped protect them throughout the pandemic and have limited any interaction or kind of contact. The impact is more aggravated in the vulnerable-fragile population we take care of, triggering severe depressions, cognitive decline, and other medical complications.

HOW DOES OUR PADAM PROGRAM SOLVE THE PROBLEM?

Our In-Home Care Programs provide the Elderly with food, diapers as needed, regular visits, conversation, emotional support, and company. We serve people from moderate to severe levels of dependency, which can vary depending on if they count on family support or not.

A key issue of our In-Home Care programs is the know-how and learning accumulated for years that allow us to arrive just in time to detect cases of extreme abandonment, loneliness, or severe cases of depression and/or medical complications.

POTENTIAL LONG-TERM IMPACT

Our Elderly are subject to rights, so they deserve our respect, honor, and care reflected in equal access to essential services and inclusive public policies, so they can fully participate in society.

Our network of services encourages to increase the development of socialization to keep elderly actives and connected through the circle of family, friends, or the community of support to provide companionship and interaction to improve their quality of life and social inclusion.

The experience of Hogar de Cristo earned through In-Home Care Programs allows our foundation to identify those more sensitive-fragile cases and address them on time, coordinating with health care and social network services to avoid our older adults dying alone.
