Reentry Schools Modality, Chile,

A momentum for vulnerable youth to retrieve their educational trajectories.

On Feb 25th, 2021, the National Council of Education gave the go-ahead to create Reentry Schools Modality or Alternative Schools in Chile, a long-awaited decision. It’s a Bill now that hopefully soon will be approved, signed, and becomes Law. It will provide an institutional nationwide structure, financing, tools, hope, and an option for Educational Path for Children and Youth between 12-21, excluded from the education system.

Around 186,000 are out-of-school, almost 50% are women.

SUMATE from Hogar de Cristo, via their own four (4) Reentry Schools, located in Santiago and Concepción, has over 25 years of transforming lives through Education. Know-How got step by step from decades of practical skills, studies, and committed directives/staff serving students who’ve been expelled or are at high risk of dropping out of traditional schools. It’s a full-time job with a mutual learning curve & practice skills for both students and teachers, one by one/case by case.

Multiple factors can trigger education exclusion, such as multidimensional poverty, big school gap, single parenting, parent’s education level, early pregnancy, caregiving for siblings, domestic violence, bullying, or need flexible schedules due to work, etc.

Students’ population assisting to Reentry school have not students’ profile of traditional schools. They’re often escaping from stressful home environments or places, subject to challenging situations & multiple traumas/wounds to be healed. This way, a Reentry school becomes a haven of stability and hope. Students can eat their regular meals, get specialized counseling, learn, connect with peers, and plan their future in a very healthy and positive atmosphere.

Reentry schools have smaller classes, flexible schedules, counseling services, and a focus on student-teacher relationships. SUMATE work with vulnerable youth, so relationships with sympathetic teachers make a big difference and keep them connected.
