Nuevo Futuro Súmate School, Southern Chile. Transforming lives through education.

Zooming reality of Bío-Bío. Over 15 thousand are excluded from the education system.

One of five Re-entry schools from Súmate-Hogar de Cristo, Nuevo Futuro is located in Lota, Bío-Bío welcoming 46 vulnerable youth that have been excluded from the education system. A region of Chile where the pandemic and economic crisis have exacerbated preexisting inequalities in some zones economically depressed for decades.

Factors that trigger education exclusion are multidimensional, such as poverty, precarious jobs, unemployment, single parenting, parents’ education level, early pregnancy, caregiving for siblings, domestic violence, bullying, etc. Many times, youth struggling to survive in a little hut with no connectivity or access to a computer, reliable internet connection, proper phone device; or even a quiet space to study or their basic needs met.

Retrieve the educational path for vulnerable youth, it is a complex process that directives and teachers like Darinka Suazo from Nuevo Futuro School understand very well because they lavish personalized attention, and know every student’s name, “smelling” when trouble is brewing, so can take proactive actions. If a student misses a day of school the teacher even the principal will make immediate follow-up calling or visiting the student at home to get what’s going on.

While the pandemic and economic crisis continue limiting in-person classes, the upper management of Súmate is working on an inclusive proposal-project with scope for the Bío-Bío Region that uses multiple digital solutions, platforms, and relocations understanding they play a key role in improving the well-being of At-risk Youth excluded from the education system in the zone.
