October 19,
Hogar de Cristo celebrates its 81st anniversary, transforming the lives of vulnerable people in Chile.

What inspired Fr. Alberto Hurtado to establish Hogar de Cristo?

It was October 18, 1944—according to his biographers, around midnight outside San Ignacio’s church in Santiago, Chile. A rainy, cold night when Fr. Hurtado unexpectedly encountered a homeless, wet, shivering, and feverish man. It moved him to tears because there was no shelter for him to go to.

The next day, October 19, speaking at a women’s retreat (about 200), he spontaneously shared this encounter. His inspiring and powerful speech had a profound impact on the women, prompting them to organize and take immediate action. The women’s openness, generosity, and understanding of the situation’s seriousness led to significant donations of various kinds, including land, jewelry, and valuables.

This action laid the groundwork for what would become one of his most important and well-known apostolic works, the Hogar de Cristo. In December 1944, Fr. Hurtado laid the first stone to start the construction.
