The Shared Housing Condominium, Punta Arenas, Chile.

A step forward on a long road ahead: Quality Affordable Housing for vulnerable Older Adults.

For the beneficiaries, a dream that has become true.

IT IS NEITHER A SHELTER NOR A NURSING HOME: it’s a true neighborhood, a community, and, above all, a new place where they can continue their life projects and remain independent.

This Shared Housing Condominium is located in Punta Arenas, Chile, in one of the world’s southernmost regions known for its harsh weather. The complex comprises 24 modern, well-insulated paired houses for vulnerable seniors. It is a project by the National Service for the Elderly (SENAMA), managed and operated by the Hogar de Cristo Foundation.

Here, residents live independently in their own homes, no longer isolated in a property near essential services. They pay only for their utilities and share the cost of the community center. Meetings are held there to coordinate and resolve possible conflicts. Many were doubling up or renting substandard rooms anywhere in town.

This innovative solution addresses a growing problem: older adults being pushed into institutions, isolated from daily life, and lacking social ties. This place rebuilds community, independence, respect, and dignity.
