Addressing Severe Poverty in Chile – Homelessness
State statistics and the census indicate nearly 20,000; however, established charities addressing this issue for decades, such as Hogar de Cristo and others from civil society, estimate the number to be over 50,000 and increasing.

In 2024, Hogar de Cristo welcomed and assisted 7,684 people who experienced homelessness. According to figures from the Ministerio de Desarrollo Social, Chile has the highest homelessness rate on the continent: Nearly 1 in 3 people experiencing this condition spend an average of six years on the streets. Additionally, the country’s capacity to provide beds is less than 15%.

Code Blue was activated. The code triggers various responses to provide shelter and support to those in the greatest need, especially those experiencing homelessness and life-threatening risks associated with extreme cold.

Hogar de Cristo offers immediate first aid and rescue 24/7, making them feel safer and more comfortable, which may lead to a sense of hope and a new beginning— the objective of this fundraising effort. The fundraising will enable us to provide better and expanded services to this high-risk population.

Access to basic amenities, such as a hot shower, clean bed, warm meal, new clothes, or a place to dry wet clothing, is highly valued. It sharply contrasts with the harsh reality they face outside. They appreciate the greeting and support, as well as the sense of dignity it conveys. Feeling safer and more comfortable might lead to a sense of hope and a new beginning. The next step at Hogar de Cristo is to prioritize providing permanent housing (Housing First and Sharing House programs), based on a critical concept: meeting basic needs and dignity before addressing the other needs, such as regular psychosocial support, to achieve social, family, and work integration.
