Hogar de Cristo: An Institution in Constant Change
Enhancing the social strategy for 2025.

Ongoing effort to remain effective by innovating approaches and diversifying services with sustainability, and strong regional efforts.

Since 2023, Hogar de Cristo has initiated a transformative journey in its social strategy, aiming to gradually shift from large, closed-setting programs to more personalized and less institutional services. The best practices gathered and learned from international experiences have encouraged Hogar de Cristo to transition to a more individualized model.

Poverty in Chile has changed significantly in recent years. Factors such as migration, a lack of affordable housing, increasing violence, an aging population, and loneliness among older adults present complex challenges that demand urgent attention. This reality calls for a shift in services for older adults, homelessness, and disability towards more inclusive, community-based, and flexible housing arrangements that empower participants while prioritizing dignity, autonomy, and inclusion. These changes will lead to positive outcomes, encouraging individuals to choose and engage with the broader community.

In-home care for older adults and individuals with mental disabilities is a clear example of personalized service; Hogar de Cristo currently provides services to over 2,200 people nationwide.

Another example is shared housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, those with disabilities, older adults, and even some younger people. Individuals who previously lived in shelters or senior residences now reside in single- or double-occupancy homes. This initiative currently allows Hogar de Cristo to accommodate 240 users in 88 independent houses.

The Hogar de Cristo aims to enhance this type of service compared to our previous efforts, recognizing it as an opportunity for social integration. Individuals who once lived in closed models are now integrating into their communities and neighborhoods. This trend has intensified over the past four years, prompting Hogar de Cristo to emphasize this service model because certain economic conditions have rendered traditional residential models unviable.
