In 2022, almost 1,800 people with mental disability were welcomed into our 43 nationwide programs.

Over 1,900,000 people in Chile present long-term or permanent mental disability conditions: 390,000 are associated with some psychiatric, mental, or intellectual difficulties, and 156,000 also have simultaneously mental disability.

Stereotyping, stigma, and discrimination are challenges people with mental disability face daily. Its most significant barrier is that imposed by our society itself. So, an all-inclusive society starts changing attitudes toward the mentally disabled community, followed by public policies to create practical social protection floors.

Based on its extensive know-how studies and research from Hogar de Cristo, Juan Cristobal Romero, its Executive Director, summarizes it in six (6) essential rights. It must be fulfilled to achieve inclusion for people with mental disabilities, especially those more disadvantaged and socially excluded:

1. Equality/non-discrimination. Its recognition under the law
2. Health and integrity as a person-individual
3. Education
4. Habilitation and Rehab
5. Employment
6. Live independently and be included in the community.
