Social innovation has been central to Hogar de Cristo from the very start in 1944 -Fr. Alberto Hurtado was a pioneering natural innovator. Among other achievements, he was the first PhD in Education; he understood the influence of the media (radio and newspapers at the time). John Dewey, a leading American scholar and education reformer from the early 20th century, inspired him. Additionally, Fr. Hurtado established the first farm school in Colina, Santiago, to provide vocational training in agriculture and break the cycle of poverty among young people.
