Francisca Elgueta
Winner of the Global Teacher Prize, Chile 2022
Congratulations!

A Chilean teacher from Betania School, SUMATE-Hogar de Cristo.

Francisca is passionate about education and innovation. A young woman and history teacher with ten years of experience committed to educating vulnerable children & youth in Chile. Since 2020 is working in the Betania School from the SUMATE Network, dedicated to Re-entry programs for out-of-school children & youth excluded from the education system.

On December 1st, the winners were announced. She pointed out, thrilled and on the verge of tearful right after receiving the award: “Let’s not forget Chile’s children and those from the world – they deserve everything. We must continue fighting for a more just world to offer them better opportunities. We must trust that they can do it from their own stories, communities, and identities -they are the most important. I take the opportunity to greet all my colleagues. Cheer! Teachers of Chile!”

Regarding her experience working in SUMATE, she expressed: “To start working at Sumate Foundation meant I reached a place where love and respect for others prevail. Regardless of our differences, a particular environment and culture are aimed at the same goal. It’s to ensure that those most excluded can complete their education.”

She speaks loud and clear about the reality of teachers and schools in Chile. “We blame teachers when discussing teaching crises and the lack of them. Nonetheless, let’s look at its multiple factors. Being a teacher must be the only profession in which success is measured by quitting working in education. It is as if we would tell an excellent surgeon to stop doing surgeries. It cannot be when you are doing so well as a teacher to hear you should leave the classroom to take better opportunities. It cannot be that quitting teaching is considered a reward for a good teacher.”
