Deepened inequalities, Chile:

Education is one of the most impacted. Many questions, but only a few answers

Where are they? How many will not return to school following the education disruption due to the pandemic and economic/social crisis? How many are already facing homelessness or groomed by gangs? We have no clue yet.

The pre-pandemic figures showed that around 186,000 children & youth were out of school-excluded from the education system. The current statistics from the Ministry of Education in Chile have jumped to over 224,000, most vulnerable and facing poverty and social exclusion. In addition, nearly 1.2 million nationwide have alarming absences levels, the steps before dropping out of school. Or rather, when the system gives up and abandons them!

The spending on education per capita is directly associated with social stratification; thus, private schools spend nearly US$ 480 per month per student, and public education is US$ 177. However, re-entry schools offer options to children & youth out of schools excluded from education, US$ 90 per month per student—a drastically insufficient contribution for those more disadvantaged At-risk.

The innovation work executed by the SUMATE model with children/youth At-risk is a radical intervention designed to make students whole. It’s a full-time job to retrieve their educational trajectories built one-on-one, day-to-day, requiring public policies and budget according to its reality & urgency.
