AUGUST, a month of Solidarity in Chile,

Since 2001, August has been the month of solidarity in Chile, a particular time when we honor the life and legacy of Fr. Alberto Hurtado SJ. The community celebrates it throughout the country to develop multiple initiatives to confront poverty-social exclusion and promote the culture of solidarity and social consciousness as a core value.

Also, AUGUST 18TH is declared the Day of Solidarity. A date set by the Chilean Congress in 1994 to commemorate Fr Hurtado’s death occurred that day in 1952, but also to honor his life and legacy. Fr Hurtado is part of Chile’s history -an inspiring model who dedicated his entire life to those more disadvantaged and socially excluded. An Apostol of social justice that worked in an astonishing array of activities and fields.

Thus, Solidarity Month is an invitation to return to the source of inspiration that fueled and consecrated his whole life: Social justice & the deep meaning of people experiencing poverty- well incarnated in his most significant and best-known apostolic work, Hogar de Cristo foundation, over 78 years of transforming lives, always aspiring to do good but doing well!
